Our Back Yard

“It’s a lot easier actually to look beyond our shores," says Richard Cassady. "To deal with the stuff in your own back yard, that’s another question.”

In this video, Richard acknowledges that dealing with our own back yard is challenging. But he also believes it’s what God has called us to do.

Take someone by the hand,” Richard challenges us, “and say I don’t know where this is going to end, but I’m willing to take a risk and walk some ways with the other person.” Richard believes that when we take these risks, the spirit of God brings healing in profound ways. “You get a taste of what the Kingdom could be like,” he says.

Richard explains that it’s important not to approach Australians Together with an “us” and “them” mentality. That will only create further barriers. If we avoid this pitfall, Richard believes that through the church, Australians Together can lead the way for wider Australia to engage in this business of reconciliation.

My hope for Australia,” shares Richard, “is where we can see people from different backgrounds come together, to be one with each other in unity and be united in the spirit of grace.”

Australians Together is about dealing with the stuff that’s in our back yard, however long the grass is, or however unmowed it might feel, or however broken the fences may feel," concludes Richard. "Our backyard needs tending to. That’s what Australians Together for me is all about.”
