Unit overview

This unit combines reading, writing and oral language that’s centred on small groups reading novels by First Nations authors. The activities guide students to explore the themes of the texts and consider multiple perspectives on characters, settings and events through writing activities. The unit broadens to assist students to consider the bigger questions of the Australian context for First Nations authors both now and in the past. It guides students to think about how hearing stories by authors with a range of cultural backgrounds can help community members to understand each other.

While this resource has been created so it can be taught in a linear fashion, feel free to start small. You may prefer to select a single activity that connects to what you’re teaching or about to teach. Even small actions can make a big difference. Please keep in mind, you don’t need to be an expert on this topic; we often learn alongside our students.

Australians Together resources are created in collaboration with First Nations cultural advisers.
