Unit overview

This integrated unit guides students through an exploration of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Daintree Rainforest, including its iconic flora and fauna. Students dive deeper into the pivotal role of the southern cassowary as a keystone species and efforts being made to protect it. They learn from the stories and cultures of varied First Nations groups who’ve lived alongside cassowaries for millennia. By the end of this unit, students develop a respect for the cassowary, understand what humans are doing to conserve the cassowary and the rainforest and honour the cultures of the First Nations Peoples who’ve long cared for this Country and mysterious animal.
