Unit overview
In this unit, students will:
- develop an understanding of reflection, rotation and symmetry and their relevance to First Nations cultures and symbols
- begin to appreciate the importance of First Nations stories and art and develop a sense of the diversity of art styles across the continent
- understand the importance of mathematics for daily life and the vast mathematical knowledges First Nations people have developed and apply as part of daily life for many thousands of years
- look to art, books and the world around them to find out about some of the symbols and shapes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people use to express culture – this gives students an appreciation of Indigenous cultures and of the broader context of which the symbols used in the lesson are a part.
