Unit overview
This unit focuses on building student understanding of quadratics in the context of First Nations hunting. Students learn about the design of the spear and apply these concepts to model the flight path of this hunting implement as a parabolic curve. They’ll experiment to achieve a maximum range and link this with the skills and knowledge of First Nations people who manufacture precise designs to improve the efficiency of their weapons and hunting techniques. Through this practical exploration, students develop stronger algebraic skills and an understanding of quadratic equations and the real-world concepts they represent.
In this unit, students will:
- learn how to model flight trajectories mathematically
- be able to manipulate and solve quadratic equations
- be able to plot parabolas and their equations.
